Public Art Project: Rocky Stone Clubhouse

The City of Moncton is seeking proposals for the creation and installation of a public art project at Moncton’s new Rocky Stone Football Field Clubhouse. This public art project is linked with the Rocky Stone Football Field capital works project that saw the construction of a new clubhouse and service building.

This is an exterior commission for a permanent public artwork.

The competition is open to all emerging and professional visual artists, designers or teams, who reside in the Province of New Brunswick.

An official copy of Request for Expressions of Interest #RFI10-019 – Public Art Competition (Rocky Stone Clubhouse), which includes all design requirements, proposal submission requirements, evaluation criteria, and general terms and conditions, may only be obtained through the City of Moncton’s Purchasing Department, or the New Brunswick Opportunities Network (http://www.gnb.ca/0099/tenders).

To obtain an official copy of the RFI document, please contact:

Moncton metalheads Dischord have a long and sordid history. The band's bio reads like an 18A soap opera: over the past five years they've had so many beefs, brawls and lineup changes that the only original member, Luc Gagne, ends the history with an ominous: "To all those who oppose us, f--- you all."

After a dozen line-up changes, Moncton metalheads Dischord are set to record a live DVD and release their second album this spring.

Said Gagne in a phone interview, "It's been tough keeping the hopes up and keeping the band going, but I think it's paying off. The lineup right now, we don't need to force anything. Everyone's on the same page."

Now comprised of Gagne on guitar, singer Norm Robichaud, bassist Jimmy Hamilton and Eric Gibbs on drums, it appears Dischord finally has their act together - and to celebrate, they're playing a live show to be filmed for an upcoming DVD at Paramount March 5, followed by a night of extreme all-ages music at the St. George Lion's Club March 13.

Dischord is the real thing: rip-roaring, head-banging thrash metal complete with long manes of hair and live performances that are borderline bloody riot. Gagne said that's what drew him to the genre in the first place.

"It's high energy. The intensity, the freedom while we're playing on stage is appealing. You get to be the bad guys," he said.

That same villainous intensity caused problems for Gagne. Metal fans love their parties, and head-banging can be a dangerous gig. Gagne kind of remembers another show Dischord played at Paramount back in 2006 - it wasn't pretty.

"Honestly, I think someone put something in my drink. I had a huge cut over my eye because I'd been head-banging and holding a bottle of beer over my head, and I bumped my head over the beer bottle. So the blood starts coming down, but I wasn't pissed about that. I was pissed because in all the commotion I had to get a new beer," he said.

Gagne said Dischord hopes to tour after releasing an album this spring, He's confident the new group will stick together long enough to see it happen.

"We're all having a good time. We like to goof around and make people laugh; it's not tense anymore as it used to be. That's the key to success," he said.

NEWS RELEASE

Legendary group The Irish Rovers at the Capitol Theatre

(Moncton, February 8, 2010) – The Capitol Theatre presents The Irish Rovers on Friday, February 26th at 8 p.m. These international ambassadors of Irish music have charmed and entertained people around the world for four decades, and continue to delight audiences with their exciting stage shows.

Throughout the years, The Irish Rovers have maintained their timeless ability to deliver a rollicking, rousing performance of good cheer – one that will soon have you singing and clapping along. Their songs have become anthems of revelry and joy among generation after generation of fans.

The story of the Irish Rovers starts in Canada, where the 16-year old George Millar and 23-year old Jim Ferguson, both new emigrants from Northern Ireland, met in Toronto at an Irish function. They ended up singing together ‘til dawn; and so the Irish Rovers were launched. After other members were recruited, the folk clubs of California became the learning grounds for the young Rovers. In 1966, “The First of the Irish Rovers”, a live album recorded at “The Icehouse” in Pasadena, was released. It generated enough excitement to warrant another album, and from this release came the million selling single “The Unicorn”, the band’s signature song to this day. Through the 70’s and early 80’s, the Rovers brought their magic to television with a weekly series for the CBC, and later, a series on the Global Network. In 1980-81, The Rovers once again soared to the top of the pop and country charts with “Wasn’t That A Party”. This real-life celebration was written by their friend, U.S. folk singer Tom Paxton, after he witnessed one of the band’s famous post-show parties. It has gone on to become an international anthem of good cheer.

The Irish Rovers continue to perform in theatres around the world, with original members George Millar and Wilcil McDowell. Will Millar retired from the band in 1995; and sadly, Jimmy Ferguson passed away in 1997. Joe Millar retired in 2005, and his son Ian Millar has since joined the group. Completing the Irish Rovers line-up today are John Reynolds and Sean O’Driscoll, a multi-instrumentalist. The Irish Rovers are still passionate about performing and will continue to tour and entertain their legions of fans.

Tickets for The Irish Rovers at the Capitol Theatre are now on sale at the Capitol Theatre Box Office, l’Escaouette, Frank’s Music, Monument Lefebvre and l’Université de Moncton, at $30.50 to $34.50. Tickets are also available by phone at (506) 856-4379 or 1-800-567-1922, or online at
www.capitol.nb.ca.

The participating artists are (in alphabetical order): Ginette Ahier, Marc Gilles Arseneault, Rémi Arsenault, Lauren Barnes, Stéphane Basque, George Belliveau, Jim Blewett, Danny Boudreau, Lina Boudreau, Christian Boulay, Danny Bourgeois, Ronald Bourgeois, Roland Bourgeois, Isabelle Bujold, Brian Coughlan, René Cormier, Mathieu D’Astous, Carole Daigle, Glen Deveau, Melody Dobson, Julie Doucette, Dominique Dupuis, François Émond, Roland Gauvin, Jac Gautreau, Christian Kit Goguen, Denis Hachey, Nadine Hébert, Paul Hébert, Mario Fayo LeBlanc, Stephen LeBlanc, Daniel Léger, Roger Lord, Jesse Mea, Chris Mersereau, Kevin McIntyre, Mick McNeely, Sébastien Michaud, Melanie Morgan, Benoit Picard, Monique Poirier, Joël Robichaud, Denis Surette, Jean Surette, Isabelle Thériault, Michelle Thibodeau, Louise Vautour and Clara Weiland. He'll be in Moncton on Sunday - January 31st to talk about what a producer does - and how to produce your own band. He'll be joined by local producers Ross Cole and Robin Ettles - If you're in a band and are heading into the studio - or writing your own songs for future recording - this going to be a really great look on what to do before you hit the studio!
