“BIG BANDS, BIG HEARTS”: Metro Moncton’s Multicultural Community Unites in Support of Haitian Relief

The Multicultural Association of the Greater Moncton Area (MAGMA) in partnership with Alta Musica, NBCC Moncton and Central United Church is inviting all of Metro Moncton to “Concert for Haiti: Big Bands, Big Hearts” this  Wednesday February 10
th at 6:30 PM at the Central United Church, 150 Queen St.

Doors open at 6:00PM and free will cash donations will be accepted as entry at the door.

All the proceeds will go to the Canadian Red Cross, to support earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

The aim of this event is not only to keep Haiti in our hearts today, but to look beyond immediate relief and to the Haitians’ longer term needs, and continue to work towards providing funds and assistance in the aftermath of this terrible tragedy.

Entertainment will feature over 70 artists and includes can’t miss performances by the Codiac Concert Band, the African Queens Dance Troupe and the Hub City Big Band.

NBCC Moncton carpentry students & instructors, Alta Musica, MAGMA staff, volunteers and board of directors have come together to create this event, collaborating in everything from building a stage to musical sound reinforcement.

MAGMA’s language classes, featuring students from over 25 different countries, will also be in attendance to show their support, so come and meet your new neighbours for this unifying cause.

The evening will also feature a tribute to local hero, the late Sgt. Mark Gallagher of the RCMP who gave his life in service to the Haitian people. The tribute will feature, among others, a special performance by the “J” Division RCMP Pipes and Drums and the Association of 8th

Canadian Hussars Pipes and Drums.

The Codiac Concert Band is a local musical collective featuring members from Dieppe, Riverview and Moncton with over 35 members. They perform a variety of musical styles and have been delighting audiences since 2003.

The African Queens is a multicultural dance troupe formed by newcomers with origins in Rwanda, Togo, Congo and Burundi. They perform traditional dance in colourful dress, moving to the sounds of eclectic and rhythmic music.

The Hub City Big Band features many of the most seasoned and accomplished musicians in the Metro Moncton area, it has been a staple on the music scene in Southeastern New Brunswick performing big band and swing music since 2002.

Built in 1913, Central United’s sanctuary can seat up to 700 people. It features some of the finest acoustics- and is one of the best kept secrets- in all of Atlantic Canada!

A full house brings out a full sound, so come one and all to enjoy some BIG music and, of course, show us your BIG Metro Moncton hearts!
